WE/ME WORK
In response to the global shift toward remote work, Citizen Architects was commissioned to rethink a traditional pharmaceutical headquarters. The goal was to dismantle the physical and psychological barriers of the "cubicle era." By removing enclosed private offices and eliminating assigned seating, we transitioned the floor plan into a dynamic environment that champions the "both/and" approach: balancing high-energy collaboration with the necessity for deep, individual focus.
Strategic Design Pillars
To draw staff back to the office through purposeful design, the renovation centred on four key strategies:
· Versatile & Modular Layouts: Utilising mobile tables and reconfigurable seating, the office can morph from a large-scale workshop to a series of intimate huddle spaces in minutes.
· Hybrid-Ready Integration: To bridge the gap between in-office and remote talent, spaces feature high-fidelity video conferencing and digital whiteboards, ensuring a seamless "omnipresent" collaboration experience.
· The "We" and "Me" Balance: While the open-plan layout promotes spontaneous interaction, the design includes acoustically treated meeting pods and dedicated quiet zones to protect deep-work productivity.
· Ownership through Co-Creation: We believe a space is only successful if its users feel a sense of belonging. By involving employees directly in the design process, we fostered a sense of ownership that has been reflected in the project's high adoption rates and positive culture.
· Innovation through Pragmatism: Flexibility doesn't have to be wasteful. We identified existing furniture that could be reused or adapted, ensuring the budget was strategically directed toward high-impact interventions that truly make a difference
