LIME WHARF
The project involves the meticulous refurbishment of a derelict park pavilion and air vent of the London Underground, originally conceived by the renowned architect Charles Holden.
We propose a sensitive restoration project of this historical landmark reimagined as a small civic hub. By blending heritage conservation with modern social utility, the pavilion has been designed to serve the neighborhood as a vibrant community café, bar, and flexible exhibition space.
The core of the design strategy was a "minimal intervention" framework, ensuring that the new program didn't overshadow the original architectural intent.
· Heritage Conservation: Central to the design was the careful restoration of Holden’s signature elements. This included the retention of the original decorative tiling, the iconic curved glass windows that offer panoramic views of the park, and the integrated period-style benches.
· Light-Touch Interventions: Rather than a heavy-handed remodel, the design team utilized subtle, contemporary additions. These updates were carefully curated to improve the building’s functionality and thermal performance without compromising its distinct Art Deco character.
· Fostering Social Connection: A new, bespoke central communal table acts as the heart of the interior. Designed to encourage spontaneous conversation and shared experiences, it transforms the pavilion from a simple transit point into a destination for social interaction.
· Collaborative Governance: The transformation was not an isolated design exercise. It was the result of extensive community and council engagement. By involving local stakeholders throughout the process, the final space reflects the actual needs and aspirations of the residents who use the park daily.
